Last Game
Earthquakes 2, Chivas USA 2; Oct. 17, 2009; Home Depot Center; Carson, Calif.

The San Jose Earthquakes managed to rattle playoff-bound Chivas USA, but Ryan Johnson's second-half goal was not enough to push the Quakes to victory as the two California teams battled to a 2-2 draw at The Home Depot Center. Johnson broke a 1-1 deadlock in the 58th minute, but Justin Braun equalized in the 66th minute; neither side managed to beat the other over the last stretch of the game. The match did not get off to an inspiring start for San Jose. Just seven minutes in, the Earthquakes defense had pushed all the way up towards the middle of the field. Chivas USA's Sacha Kljestan got to a loose ball and sent a through ball towards Maykel Galindo, who easily outpaced the Earthquakes defense. Brandon McDonald chased after Galindo but could not catch him. Galindo dribbled into the penalty area and ripped a 12-yard shot past Andrew Weber and into the back of the net. San Jose held firm though as Chivas USA's attackers fired several more shots on goal in the following 10 minutes. In the 21st minute, San Jose pulled level. Shea Salinas crossed the ball to the left post and McDonald powered a header into the back of the goal. Chivas USA had a few more chances to take the lead in the first half but Weber made a pair of saves, stopping Jesse Marsch's potent long-range shot in the 27th minute and turning away rookie Michael Lahoud's in the 35th minute. San Jose went into the break tied 1-1 but pushed forward and eventually went ahead. Chris Leitch sent a free kick from about 35 yards out towards the left side of the penalty area in the 58th minute. Johnson got his head to the ball and beat Chivas goalkeeper Zach Thornton. The ball looped high into the air and went over Thornton's head as San Jose took the lead. But it was ultimately short-lived. In the 66th minute, Ante Jazic sent a cross into the penalty area. Justin Braun beat Weber to the ball and knocked a header over Weber, who had charged off his line to try and punch the ball away. Braun's header settled into the back of the net and the hosts had a surge of momentum. But Maicon Santos let San Jose off the hook twice. First, Braun sent Santos in on goal alone with a clever backheel inside the box. Santos had space and fired a shot but Weber dived and kicked the ball clear. Moments later, Santos redirected a feed from Galindo on goal but launched it well over the crossbar. Braun had a late look on goal, but Weber did well to stop Braun's 20-yard attempt and San Jose and Chivas USA split the points.

Last Game vs. LA Galaxy
Earthquakes 2, LA Galaxy 1; June 20, 2009; Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum; Oakland, Calif.

Goals have been hard to come by this season for San Jose Earthquakes forward Pablo Campos. But against the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Brazilian has looked like a world-beater, tallying a goal and an assist Saturday to give the Quakes a badly needed 2-1 victory against their in-state rivals in the second California Clasico this season. Campos' penalty kick in the sixth minute -- his second strike against the Galaxy this season -- staked the Quakes to an early lead. His knockdown then allowed Ryan Johnson to double the home side's advantage in the 54th minute. Jovan Kirovski pulled a goal back for the visitors 11 minutes later, but a makeshift San Jose backline withstood some withering pressure to record just their third win of the season and hand the Galaxy their first road loss of the campaign. The last time the two teams met on April 18, it was Campos who had put the home side up after just five minutes. On this occasion he duplicated the feat, as his surging run into the box saw him brought down by Gregg Berhalter after just five minutes. A minute later Campos dispatched the spot kick, sending it just past Donovan Ricketts' dive inside the left post to put the home side up 1-0. San Jose doubled their advantage midway through the second half. A cross from Chris Leitch was knocked down by Campos towards the far post, and Johnson was first to react, stabbing his shot past Ricketts to give the Quakes a 2-0 lead. L.A. didn't let up, and pulled within a goal in the 65th minute. A Magee free kick found substitute Alan Gordon in the box, and his header was then redirected by Kirovski past Cannon. It was Kirovski's first goal since scoring for Colorado against Toronto FC back on Oct. 7, 2007. Kirovski then nearly added another three minutes later, but his flick header from a Magee corner was saved smartly by Cannon. The Quakes continued to survive some hair-raising goalmouth incidents as the game edged towards full time, with an 83rd minute header from Berhalter that sailed just wide the best of the lot. But San Jose managed to hang and claim a vital win against their bitter rivals.

His only career goal prior to Saturday came while he played for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Johnson Nets Team-Leading 11th Goal of 2009

San Jose forward Ryan Johnson tallied his 11th goal of the season vs. Chivas USA on Oct. 17, which is good for a fifth place tie among league leaders. Johnson received a well-placed free kick from Chris Leitch and headed it over the top of the imposing Zach Thornton in the 58th minute of the Earthquakes 2-2 draw with Chivas USA. Johnson is the first Quakes player since 2004 to reach double digits in goals. Brian Ching was the last Earthquakes player to reach 10 goals when he scored 12 in 2004. Ronald Cerritos' 15 goals in 1999 are the all-time single season record for San Jose.

Leitch Notches Two More Assists

Quakes defender Chris Leitch assisted on both San Jose goals in their 2-2 draw with Chivas USA on Saturday, Oct. 17 to continue building his career high total. The University of North Carolina product now has seven assists in the 2009 campaign, compared to his six career assists coming into this season. He passed the ball to Shea Salinas to set up Brandon McDonald's goal in the 21st minute and served in a free kick to Ryan Johnson to give San Jose the lead in the 58th minute. This marks the first time in Leitch's career that he has had two assists in one game.

Weber Makes a Career-High Eight Saves

Earthquakes goalkeeper Andrew Weber made a career-high eight saves in San Jose's 2-2 draw with Chivas USA on Saturday, Oct. 17. The highlight of Weber's night came in stoppage time, when he made a save, challenging Justin Braun one-on-one to keep the game tied. Weber tied Joe Cannon, who made eight saves on April 11 vs. Chicago and Aug. 22 against Kansas City, for the most saves in a game by a San Jose goalkeeper in 2009.

Four-Game Unbeaten Streak on Road

With their 2-2 draw with Chivas USA on Saturday, the San Jose Earthquakes are now unbeaten in their last four matches away from home. The Quakes tied Colorado on Sept. 23 1-1, defeated D.C. United 2-1 on Sept. 27 and tied Toronto FC 1-1 on Oct. 10 to start the streak. San Jose's last game of the season comes on the road against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center.

Quakes Score Two on Chivas USA

The San Jose Earthquakes became only the third team to score two goals against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center this season. Chivas had only conceded eight goals at home in their first 14 games going into Saturday, but San Jose broke through with goals from Brandon McDonald (21st minute) and Ryan Johnson (58th minute).

Earthquakes team orthopedist Dr. Mike Oberlander performed both surgeries at the Sequoia Surgical Pavilion. Hernandez suffered the ankle injury in the Quakes match against Toronto FC at BMO Field on Oct. 10. He will miss the Quakes remaining two matches but is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2010 season. Hernandez appeared in 16 matches this season for the Earthquakes.
