Quakes Post Third Highest Attendance Average in Franchise History
The San Jose Earthquakes had a strong season at the box office in 2009, as they were one of only three teams in Major League Soccer to have an increase in their average attendance. They had the largest increase league-wide, having their attendance go up 2.9 percent from 2008. Their average attendance for the 2009 season was 14,114, which was good for their third highest average in franchise history behind 17,232 in 1996 and 14,959 in 1999.
Alvarez up for AT&T Goal of the Year
Earthquakes midfielder Arturo Alvarez scored his first game winning goal of the season in the 63rd minute against Real Salt Lake on May 30 and has been nominated for the AT&T Goal of the Year. Alvarez received a pass from teammate Bobby Convey near the penalty area and split a couple of Real Salt Lake defenders, then ripped a left footed shot past the diving Nick Rimando from about 25 yards out into the top corner of the far post. Cannon up for Degree Men Save of the Year
Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon has been nominated for the Degree Men Save of the Year for his save in the Earthquakes 2-1 win on May 30 over Real Salt Lake. Cannon robbed forward Yura Movsisyan in the first minute of stoppage time by pushing his effort from the top of the area over the bar. This shot seemed destined for the back of the net, but Cannon's sprawling save helped preserve the three points. To vote for Cannon to get into the Top 10, go to

McDonald Visits Ardenwood Elementary School in Fremont
San Jose Earthquakes defender Brandon McDonald visited Ardenwood Elementary School on Thursday, Oct. 29 as part of the Earthquakes community outreach program. The Glendale, Ariz. native emphasized the importance of eating right in order to stay healthy and perform well in sports as well as other facets of life. McDonald addressed his own personal experiences with a healthy lifestyle and how it helped him become a professional athlete. The children were enthusiastic when McDonald asked them about the healthy foods they eat. After he finished speaking, McDonald led a juggling contest with a few first grade children. He then opened the floor to the children to ask questions and share their love for soccer. Following his appearance in front of the entire first grade, McDonald went into the different first grade classrooms and signed player cards for the students.
